It is one of the most common causes of waterborne disease in humans and can affect anyone who comes into contact with contaminated water or food. The parasite is passed from person to person through direct contact or by ingesting contaminated water.

People with weakened immune systems are especially susceptible to getting cryptosporidiosis and the symptoms can be more severe for them. Symptoms usually include profuse, watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting. In some cases fever, dehydration, weight loss and anorexia may occur as well. Symptoms can last from a few days up to two weeks.

It’s important to take proper precautions if you think you have come into contact with contaminated food or water because there is no specific treatment for crypto; however, it is possible to manage symptoms and prevent further transmission by drinking plenty of fluids, eating light meals that are easy on your stomach and getting rest when needed. To prevent infection, make sure you only drink clean, treated water and always wash your hands after going to the bathroom or changing diapers. Additionally it’s important not to swallow any lake or river water when swimming and avoid recreational waters if you have crypto symptoms.

Cryptosporidiosis is a serious illness but one that can be prevented by taking proper hygiene measures like washing your hands frequently and avoiding contact with any potential sources of contamination.
