It is most commonly found in dairy products, deli meats, seafood, and vegetables. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, headache, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In more serious cases, listeriosis can cause septicemia and meningitis. Pregnant women are particularly at risk of developing listeriosis due to their weakened immune system during pregnancy.
Fortunately, listeriosis can be prevented with proper hygiene when preparing and storing food. Raw meats should always be cooked thoroughly before eating, especially when pregnant. Any perishable food items such as deli meats and cheeses should be refrigerated as soon as possible and eaten within a few days. Thoroughly washing all fruits and vegetables before eating them is also recommended to remove any potentially harmful bacteria. Finally, anyone with a weakened immune system should be careful about what they eat and consult with their doctor for additional advice on how to avoid foodborne illnesses like listeriosis.
