A heart attack occurs when there is a blockage in an artery that prevents oxygen-rich blood from reaching part of the heart muscle, causing it to become damaged or die.

When someone is having a heart attack, they may experience chest pain, pressure, fullness or discomfort; shortness of breath; cold sweat; nausea; lightheadedness; and/or arm, neck, jaw, shoulder or back pain. Symptoms can vary greatly depending on the individual’s medical history and severity of the attack.

In order to prevent a heart attack or reduce its severity, individuals should lead a healthy lifestyle that includes eating nutritious foods low in saturated fat, exercising regularly and avoiding smoking. If someone experiences any symptoms associated with a heart attack they should seek medical attention immediately.

Medical treatment for a heart attack typically involves medication to help break up the blockage in the artery as well as restoring oxygen flow to the affected area of the heart. In severe cases where medication does not work, surgery may be needed to restore proper function to the heart.

It is important for everyone to understand the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and how to properly take care of their hearts by living an active and healthy lifestyle.
