Each year, millions of people around the world become ill with influenza, making it one of the most common illnesses in humans. While there are many different strains of influenza viruses circulating each season, they all have the same general symptoms: fever, chills, body aches, sore throat, headache and extreme fatigue. Some people may also experience gastrointestinal problems such as nausea and vomiting.

The best way to protect yourself against influenza is to get vaccinated each year. An annual flu vaccine can help your body create immunity against the most prevalent virus strains for that season and reduce your chances of getting sick. It’s also important to take extra steps to reduce your risk of getting sick including washing your hands frequently and avoiding close contact with people who are already ill.

In addition to getting an annual vaccine and following proper hygiene practices, taking natural supplements like echinacea or vitamin C may also provide some protection from influenza infections by boosting your immune system. While these supplements don’t replace the effectiveness of a flu shot, they can be beneficial for providing additional support for your body’s defenses against viruses.

If you do get sick with influenza despite taking preventive measures, there are treatments available that can help reduce your symptoms and make recovery quicker. Over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help ease fever and body aches while decongestants may be helpful in reducing sinus congestion and pressure. Most cases of influenza can be treated at home with plenty of rest and fluids; however, if you are experiencing difficulty breathing or any other concerning symptoms, contact your healthcare provider right away.
