They are the most common mental health condition, affecting nearly 20% of Americans each year. Anxiety disorders can be very disabling and debilitating, making it difficult to cope with daily activities and responsibilities. People who suffer from anxiety often feel a sense of fear or uneasiness that is disproportionate to the situation they’re in or cannot be explained by any logical reason. Symptoms may include panic attacks, excessive worry and intrusive thoughts.
Treating anxiety disorders is not always easy but there are various strategies that have been found to be effective. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that has been proven to help those suffering from anxiety. This type of therapy helps people recognize their anxious thought patterns, identify triggers, develop coping skills, and modify behaviors that contribute to their symptoms. Medication such as antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs can also be prescribed when needed in combination with psychotherapy.
Having good self-care habits like regular exercise, getting enough sleep, eating healthy food, spending time outdoors, socializing with friends and family, and setting aside time for relaxation can help manage anxiety levels as well. Support groups can also provide valuable emotional support in dealing with anxiety. Most importantly, remember that anxiety is treatable; reaching out for professional help if you need it is always the best course of action!
