While atopic dermatitis can occur at any age, it most commonly appears in infants and young children.
Atopic dermatitis is caused by an overactive immune response to certain irritants in the environment. These include dust mites, pet dander, pollen and certain detergents or soaps. It can also be triggered by stress, sweat or other environmental factors such as temperature changes. Symptoms may vary depending on the person and range from mild itching to severe discomfort and inflammation.
There are many ways to treat atopic dermatitis, but lifestyle changes are usually the first step in controlling the condition. This includes avoiding common triggers, wearing loose-fitting clothes made of breathable fabrics such as cotton, keeping the skin hydrated with moisturizers and avoiding hot baths or showers. Over-the-counter medications such as antihistamines may help relieve itching while prescription creams can help reduce inflammation. For more serious cases, doctors may prescribe stronger medications such as oral steroids or topical immunomodulators.
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic condition that cannot be cured completely; however it can be managed with proper treatment and prevention methods. With these strategies, those living with atopic dermatitis can lead happy and comfortable lives without fear of their symptoms returning.
