Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is an inflammatory skin condition that affects the apocrine sweat glands, primarily located in areas of the body where there are high concentrations of hair follicles such as the underarms, groin, and buttocks.

The condition is characterized by red bumps, abscesses, and painful nodules that develop in these areas and often leave behind deep scarring after they have been drained or surgically removed.

HS can cause a range of physical symptoms including pain, itching, swelling, and skin discoloration. It can also have an effect on emotional health as those living with the condition often report feelings of depression, anxiety, frustration and low self-esteem due to their inability to engage in activities due to discomfort and embarrassment from HS lesions.

While the exact cause of HS is unknown, it is believed to be related to hormone imbalances, genetics and/or environmental factors such as obesity or smoking. Treatments for HS vary depending on severity but can include antibiotics, topical creams/ointments, steroid injections or laser therapy. Surgery may also be recommended if other treatments are not effective.

If you believe you may have HS it’s important to speak with a dermatologist who can diagnose the condition accurately and recommend an appropriate treatment plan for your individual case. Early diagnosis is key as it may reduce potential long-term damage from severe cases of HS and can provide much needed relief from uncomfortable symptoms associated with this chronic condition.
